The lone man herding cattle on an expansive western range is a worldwide icon of rugged individualism. However, that cowboy was likely running cattle on public land with a heavily subsidized lease from the federal government. Our modern billionaires (or trillionaires) are cowboys of a sort, “successful businessmen” who enjoy star power and riches untold. However, their fortunes were likely built through a combination of other people’s labor, public infrastructure investment, and governmental contracts. As a “solo” singer/songwriter, I know a thing or two about rugged individualism. I mostly write songs by myself, releasing records under my own name. But I also had devoted parents who worked tirelessly to spare me graduating from college in debt. I had great teachers who encouraged me to think of myself as an artist. I’ve had record labels, managers, booking agents, and publicists helping spread word of my endeavors. Then there’s my wife and family, who have invested more than any in my career, and have paid disproportionate sacrifices for their loyalty. For a “solo artist,” I’ve not really done anything alone…and no one ever really does. The very same American culture that exalts the power of the individual has been working overtime to “flood the zone” and convince you that…there’s not much one person can do to change anything. But we are not alone. The solution is not to put all of our faith in a different individual to lead us. We are the only ones who can alter the course of our current American trajectory, and alter it we must. We will make positive change the only way we ever have: together, from the ground up. There have already been many brazen efforts to undermine this election and its outcome, with more to surely follow. We must exercise our right to vote, demanding accountability in such numbers and with such moral clarity that the will of the people is unequivocal. If we do this we will know that we are not alone, and therefore we will not be powerless. My work is to pay attention, then tell my truth in song. My job is to record those songs, then travel around playing them for you. If this country goes too much further down the path it’s headed, I won’t really be free to do either my work or my job. Educators, scientists, artists, and so many more will not be free to do theirs either. This is not a histrionic take or an overreaction, and it will likely be a very long time before we get another chance to make our will known if we don’t do it now. Forty percent participation in midterm elections is a shameful statistic for the supposedly greatest democracy on Earth. No matter your political persuasion, please vote on November 3rd. Let’s have an honest and comprehensive accounting of who we want to be and where we want to go, and then let’s get to work, do our jobs, and together we can begin to become the country we have always professed to be. Michael Schwartz, who has been teaching for the last decade about the profound spiritual, artistic, and cultural references and themes found in Cohen's work. I’ll perform a half dozen of Cohen’s songs, drawing upon some of his most familiar works in addition to some lesser-known selections. Free to the public but please register at the link above.
