MAYBE IT’S ALL THE SAME THING Every morning I take Leo to a dog park a stone’s throw from Boston’s Route 93—a forest clearing where dogs are allowed off leash. Chickadees, blue jays, tufted titmouse, and cardinals punctuate the hushed thrum of rush hour traffic. Despite all the dogs, people occasionally glimpse an 8-point buck at the edge of the trees. This is the place pictured on the cover of Spring Green, and this morning ritual is the calm eye in my tempestuous suburban family schedule. It’s been said that ‘adulthood’ is the ability to hold conflicting truths at once. My dog park routine helps me acclimatize to these grown-up incongruities. But I often find myself zooming out, shifting my perspective to a scale where certainties become questionable. Maybe wilderness and development aren’t mutually exclusive, just superficially varied ideas that we express onto the same landscape? Maybe wildness and domestication aren’t clearly demarcated, but two points on the same continuum? How many of the boundaries we construct to insulate ourselves from the world actually keep us from experiencing its true nature? My family is, thankfully, doing pretty good right now, healthy and thriving in its own way. Just an ocean away families are daily torn asunder by war and politics, while others just down the street are upended by twisted and dishonest policies. Many catastrophes often seem like someone else’s far-off problem. But if you pull back enough—not so far, really—you start to see how it’s all connected. The divisions are often artificial; it’s all just us. The dog and the deer are each animals, and I take great joy in witnessing both run free. The freeway and the forest weave together through the same neighborhood. The children of Ukraine, Gaza, or Iran—could they not be ours, too? From a distance, you see how alone we are, how much we belong to each other. These days, there’s a lot I miss: an outstretched hand in a dim bar, poorly marked stairs, the jar of peanut butter tucked in the dark recesses of the pantry. But other things come into sharper focus. I grieve what I see and can’t change on my own. I sing about all of it—my heart full of joy and sorrow at once. The personal and the political roil together inside me, inseparable as the cream from the coffee. That’s because they are not different things, they’re the same thing. Once we see ourselves and the world through such a lens, it begs the question: what will we do about it? For me, raising my voice in song is my small contribution. Does it matter? It’s hard to say. But when I zoom back in, standing in front of you on any given night, it matters very much to me. SPRING GREEN ALBUM RELEASE TOUR The album release tour continues through some neighborhoods a little farther from home. It’s the perfectly intimate space for a duo performance with Andrew Stern on electric guitar, and that’s what’ll be on tap this evening. Just a handful of tickets left, so don’t wait! Fri Apr 17 - Concerts In The Studio, Freehold NJ ^ (SOLD OUT!) I’m excited to play this series in Bruce Springsteen’s old stomping grounds…and we sold it out in advance! Sat Apr 18 - Jalopy, Brooklyn NY ^ There are upwards of 2.5 million people in Brooklyn alone, never mind the surrounding boroughs of New York City. I need, like, 100 people for this show. It doesn’t seem like that heavy a lift, but to be honest it’s always a challenge to get people out in NYC. If you’re a subway ride away, come! If you know someone in the area, let ‘em know they should be at this full band show! Sun Apr 19 - The Kate, Old Saybrook CT ^ I’ve played so many supporting sets for an incredible array of artists at this venue over the years, like Richard Shindell, Amy Helm, & Larry Campbell & Teresa Williams, and Lori McKenna, to name a few. I’ve never done my own headlining show however, so I’m really excited to bring my band and play longer than 30 minutes! Connecticut folks this is my only area appearance for now, so come on down. Sometimes, I’m reticent to fully demo a song for fear that I won’t be able to top it when it comes time to put it on an album. I love a lot about this demo of “Harder Than It Has To Be,” and though the Spring Green band has never heard it, it’s fun to see how much the album version borrows from and builds on the demo.
