      <image:title>Newsletter - MAY 2026 NEWSLETTER</image:title>
<image:caption>SPRING’LL DO THE REST “Clear out the dead wood, last year’s leaves Let some light in, just let it breathe Snow is gone like an unwanted guest Spring’ll do the rest” -unreleased song Maybe it’s different where it’s always warmer, but here in New England spring is a long and drawn-out process, a protracted bait-and-switch. After taking far longer to ramp up than us winter-weary Yankees would hope, it arrives seemingly all at once, a riotous profusion of sound and color. The daffodils and tulips feel like they take forever to bloom, but I’ve found that I can cut down the wait by putting some intention into the process of looking, and preparing, for spring. If you love the bright green hues and blue skies at the height of spring, there’s more to appreciate if you learn to recognize its precursors. Where I live, it’s the sharp trill of the red-winged blackbird, one of the earliest harbingers of winter’s passing. The world is unfailingly cold, grey, and brown when I first hear one, but the spring green isn’t far behind. Likewise when I see and hear the salamanders, frogs, and toads return to the woodland vernal pools. It’s almost certainly freezing, wet, and dark when they become active—I call it ‘salamander weather’—but it’s every bit a sign of spring as a magnolia blossom. Appreciate the progress, however gradual, and you’re far less likely to burnout waiting for the seasonal payoff. Biding one’s time doesn’t have to be a passive and inactive. One of my favorite chores is tidying up the flower beds around our house, a bit of outdoor spring cleaning to make way for the season. (Yes, I know about the pollinators. I try and wait as long as I can, but I’m mostly moving any sleeping creepy crawlies to the woodlot at the back of our property, not shipping off bags of yard waste to a landfull.) Underneath that dense mat of dead vegetation, pale new shoots are invariably poking through the mud, greening up with each passing day. Perhaps a crocus or two is waiting to be uncovered, a touch of yellow or purple punctuating the otherwise drab tableau. Because of these anticipatory preparations, all it takes is a couple days of warm, sunny weather and all of a sudden the hellebores and bluebells are everywhere. What once seemed impossible now seems inevitable. I spend the time in between each new record writing and preparing, always on the lookout for a sign of what feels like it wants to happen next. If the songs are dormant, trapped beneath the surface, I try to focus on living a life worth writing about. I keep my spirits up by focussing on incremental progress and little victories. I guess it’s the folksinger in me that has learned to celebrate the more numerous smaller milestones, rather than postponing joy until that one big break. Goal and process are inextricably bound, a continuum, one meaning nothing without the other. A little preparation and attention to the signs of impending change go a long way. Spring’ll do the rest. SPRING GREEN ALBUM RELEASE TOUR The album release tour winds down this month after a short trip through the Midwest with Andrew Stern on electric guitar. Wed May 6 - The Ark, Ann Arbor MI - 8 pm One of the best singer/songwriter venues in the country, period. An intimate room with impeccable sound, there’s not a bad seat in the house. It doesn’t feel like a proper album release tour unless I get back to The Ark. I was just here with Lori McKenna last fall, and I hope to see some of you for a night of my own songs! Thu May 7 - Cafe Carpe, Fort Atkinson WI - 8 pm It’s been a minute since I’ve been back to the Carpe, but this is the listening room/bar/restaurant/vibrant community space that everyone wishes was in their town. “King Of Nothing,” the first song on Spring Green, actually has its roots in Fort Atkinson, so it’ll be fun to show that song its ancestral homeland. Fri May 8 - CSPS, Cedar Rapids - 7 pm This room just keeps getting better and better. A few years ago, they’d renovated and added a bar and some other amenities. I was particularly grateful for the new elevator, which makes that second floor load in a lot easier. We’ll be relaxed and ready to rock, not winded from schlepping our gear up that long flight of stairs! Sat May 9 - Molly’s House Concerts, Lincolnville IL - 7 pm We’ll wrap up the run with a house concert just outside Chicago. Andrew’s mom is coming to this gig, so let’s fill the (literal) house so she feels like her son is making good life decisions. Better yet, bring your mom! Which Side?: A Protest Music Teach-Out May 19 - The Burren, Somerville MA - 8 pm It’s always amusing to me when people cling to some perceived distinction between “political” and “non-political” art. I’m quite certain no such line exists, and that creative process, itself some measure of protest against the status quo, is inherently political. I’m excited to take part in this multi-artist series, where I’ll be performing both an original and a cover song backed by the perfectly-named house band, The Paid Protesters. Special guest appearance with the Lobster Cove String Quartet May 23 - Annisquam Village Church, Gloucester MA - 7:30 pm I’m excited to team up with Scott Moore and his Lobster Cove String Quartet, with Zachariah Hickman making it a quintet for a set of my own songs in the middle of their program (Stravinsky, Piazzolla, and more) at this gorgeous New England chapel. I’ve been to a prior string quartet performance here and can attest that it is a visually and sonically inspiring place to listen to some music. May 30 - WBUR Festival @ CitySpace, Boston MA - 4:45 pm If I’m not listening to music, I’m tuned in to WBUR. I’m very honored to be a part of the station’s annual celebrations of arts, culture, and ideas. I’ll be appearing jointly with my friend, environmental journalist, and writer Meera Subramanian for a session exploring how music and storytelling can help us slow down, and reconnect with ourselves and the natural world. As part of the conversation, Meera and I will read from her wonderful new graphic novel A Better World Is Possible, and I’ll play a few songs from Spring Green. ON THE HORIZON June 21 - Fight Back With A Song!, Dedham MA June 27 - Dragonfly Barn, Bridgton ME July 1 - Marblehead Festival of Arts, Marblehead MA (string quintet) MP3 of the MONTH My unreleased song “Spring’ll Do The Rest” is the obvious choice for this month’s track. I’ve tweaked and edited this one over the years, always into it but never felt it was quite ready for the big time. It’s available for the month of May at my Bandcamp page. Enjoy! LAST 2nd SHIFT MUSIC SERIES SPRING SEASON SHOW TONIGHT! The last show of the Spring 2026 season of the 2nd Shift Music Series that I curate at the Charles River Museum of Industry and Innovation in Waltham MA is TONIGHT! I only help present artists that I truly believe in, so trust me when I say you will not be disappointed. Thu Apr 30 - Laurie MacAllister SIDEMAN SECTION No sideman gigs this month, I’m tending my own garden. A WORD ABOUT PATREON - JOIN OUR PATREON COMMUNITY! I love streaming music, and stream much of the music I listen to. But streaming does not translate into support, if we define “support” as “generating enough income to keep the lights on and fund the creation of more new music.” This is not your fault, we are all victims of tech companies’ unsustainable (except for them) model. The best way to sustainably support my creative output is by getting a subscription to my Patreon. As you're thinking about what you want to support in the coming year, I'd be honored if you made my music one of those things. For as little as $5/month ($60/year), you can help me do things like release new songs, make new albums, and tour consistently. In return, you get early access to all new music and much more. Thank you for your support! peace, mark</image:caption>
