<image:title>Newsletter - JUNE 2026 NEWSLETTER</image:title>
<image:caption>VERY SPECIAL SHOW ANNOUNCEMENT! I am beyond excited to announce a very special “Mark Erelli & Friends” show I am doing at Groton Hill Music Center this fall. Two of my dearest musical friends Lori McKenna and Amy Helm will join me and my band (also friends) for a joyful, collaborative evening. Me and my band will accompany Amy and Lori in the first set, and they’ll join us for some of my songs in the second. Oh yeah, this is happening in the BIG ROOM! Newsletter members can access the best seats now with the artist pre-sale code FRIENDS. GET YOUR “MARK ERELLI & FRIENDS” TIX NOW! WHEN I GROW UP The Traveling Wilburys’ 1988 debut album Vol. 1 was released in the fall of my freshman year of high school. My listening habits were transitioning from the hair metal of junior high to classic rock, so I of course knew of Bob Dylan and his cultural significance. Tom Petty had been the ubiquitous soundtrack for my entire life up to that point. George Harrison’s Cloud Nine resurgence the previous year made him a frequent presence on MTV. I had no idea who Jeff Lynne was, but I liked his voice. Then there was that last guy, the one with the pasty white complexion, clearly dyeing his hair jet black as his Ray Bans, basically singing like a girl. (Remember, 14-year old boy talking here.) Though they’d all clearly been through the wringer over the years, Roy Orbison seemed beyond frail and old to me. I wonder how 52-year old Orbison thought of himself at the time? In 1988, his early singles on Sun Records, followed by breakout chart toppers like “Only The Lonely,” “Crying,” and “In Dreams” had long faded into the rearview mirror. The latter half of the 70s and 80s seemed a bit rough for him (any Laminar Flow fans out there?), as the times moved on from a man whose music had never quite sounded contemporary in the first place. To find himself in the company of legends like Dylan and Harrison, and revered by younger stars like Petty, had to have been energizing. Likewise, did Mystery Girl, the record he was working on just before he died that went on to become a giant posthumous success, make him feel full of possibility? In a few weeks, I’ll somehow turn the same age as Orbison was in the Traveling Wilburys. It’s also the same age that he was when he died of a heart attack. To look at the ages of all the band members leaves me incredulous and more than a bit sobered: they all seemed so impossibly wizened and ancient to a teenager, and yet there was so much seminal work that they and their peers had yet to do. Jackson Browne had yet to make I’m Alive, and Neil Young hadn’t recorded Harvest Moon. Dylan’s Time Out Of Mind and Love and Theft weren’t even twinkles in his eye. Hell, the youngest member of the band hadn’t even released his two most successful albums (Full Moon Fever or Wildflowers) yet! They seemed washed up to a teenager, and yet still had so much left to say. Somehow, when I look at the man in the mirror I don’t feel old at all or, I’ll sheepishly admit, even very “grown up.” Despite much visual evidence to the contrary, I still feel closer to that teenager than the middle-aged man staring back at me. Don’t get me wrong, I know I’m 52 but I don’t feel that age, at all. Though I may feel like I know a lot more, I enjoy less overall certainty than in my youth. I still catch myself thinking and dreaming like I have much of my life and career ahead of me, a biological impossibility. And there it is again, the adult necessity of somehow finding a way to hold space for two incongruent ideas to both be true. I used to tell myself that if I hadn’t “made it” in music by the time I was 30, I’d case the guitar and go back to science. I no longer even remember turning 30, though I do recall feeling like I had barely begun as I blew past 40. I’m now sidling up to (and hopefully surpassing) the age of some of my idols. I’ve never enjoyed anything close to the degree of commercial success they had, but I still feel compelled to stick around. There’s so much work to do and so much left to say that even survival now feels feels like victory. And I’ll take it, for as long as I can. ANNOUNCING MY SUMMER RESIDENCY AT THE BOSTON HARBOR HOTEL FRI JUNE 12 & 26 FRI JULY 10 & 24 FRI AUG 7 & 21 This summer my band and I will play a free show on the Boston waterfrontevery other Friday night! A beautiful view of the Boston Harbor! The Trillium beer garden relocated basically in front of the stage! Oh yeah…there’ll also be music! Old songs, new songs, a rotating cast of musicians, a cover or two. Maybe I’ll even pick up the Telecaster again? It’ll be a way to have fun, reach some new ears, and stay busy a little closer to home after all the travel this past spring. Come out and see us! And - want to help me reach new listeners by working the crowd a little? I'm looking for one or two friendly faces at each show to volunteer to hand out stickers and flyers to folks who might be hearing my music for the first time. We’ll walk you through what to do before each show, you’ll meet the band, and as a thank you we’ll send you home with a piece of merch of your choice. If you’re interested in learning more or signing up, fill out this form. And thank you! SPRING GREEN TOUR MERCH I’m home from my Spring Green album release tour travels…and lucky you: I still have some merch!Of course there are plenty of copies of the new album on vinyl and CD. But if you weren’t able to come out to a show and grab a t-shirt or an autographed “Spring Green” lyric poster, you can buy one on Bandcamp! You can use the code sgposterto get 40% off a “Spring Green” lyric poster! SHOWS Sat May 30 - WBUR Festival @ CitySpace, Boston MA - 4:45 pm If I’m not listening to music, I’m tuned in to WBUR, so I’m very honored to be a part of the station’s annual celebrations of arts, culture, and ideas. I’ll be appearing jointly with my friend, environmental journalist and writer Meera Subramanian, for a session exploring how music and storytelling can help us slow down, and reconnect with ourselves and the natural world. As part of the conversation, Meera and I will read from her wonderful new graphic novel A Better World Is Possible, and I’ll play a few songs from Spring Green. Fri June 12 - Boston Harbor Hotel, Boston MA - 6:30 pm Free show with my band as part of our summer residency (see above)! Sun June 21 - Fight Back With A Song!, Dedham MA - 3 pm The past decade or so, I’ve made a conscious choice to let my shows be a place we can largely forget about politics, politicians, and doomscrolling. I’ve never mentioned the president by name on stage, and I make a real effort to let the songs do the talking. However, we are also currently living through a pivotal moment for American democracy and, if asked, I will always show up with my songs in support of what I feel is the right side of history. This will be one of those occasions, where I’ll do a short set alongside Alastair Moock, Kemp Harris, Les Sampou, and more. Fri June 26 - Boston Harbor Hotel, Boston MA - 6:30 pm Free show with my band as part of our summer residency (see above)! Sat June 27 - Dragonfly Barn, Bridgton ME - 7:30 pm I first played this lovely venue in Maine last summer and have been itching to return. Any chance I get to return and play in one of my favorite states, I’m there. This will be an intimate and acoustic solo performance, so come on out and maybe I can take a request or two. Mark Erelli + His String Quintet Returns! Wed July 1 - Marblehead Festival of Arts, Marblehead MA - 8 pm I am so excited to return to this seaside summer festival to headline a night backed by my string quintet! I’ll have Zachariah Hickman and his string arrangements in tow, and maybe we’ll even throw a quintet version of song or two from Spring Green into the set! MP3 of the MONTH My unreleased song “The Youngest Kid,” a meditation on the disconnect between my actual and perceived age, pairs well with this month’s newsletter. My Patreon folks have heard a full band version of this song, and you can too if you join my Patreon community. It’s available for the month of June at my Bandcamp page. Enjoy! SIDEMAN SECTION No sideman gigs this month, I’m tending my own garden. A WORD ABOUT PATREON JOIN OUR PATREON COMMUNITY! I love streaming music, and stream much of the music I listen to. But streaming does not translate into support, if we define “support” as “generating enough income to keep the lights on and fund the creation of more new music.” This is not your fault, we are all victims of tech companies’ unsustainable (except for them) model. The best way to sustainably support my creative output is by getting a subscription to my Patreon. As you're thinking about what you want to support in the coming year, I'd be honored if you made my music one of those things. For as little as $5/month ($60/year), you can help me do things like release new songs, make new albums, and tour consistently. In return, you get early access to all new music and much more. Thank you for your support! peace, mark</image:caption>
