I have spent more than a few early morning hours stressing about it, but I’m also trying to take advantage of opportunities and experiences that I’m not usually around to participate in. This all boils down to embracing almost hyperlocal actions—within a block or two of my house—or sometimes literally in my backyard. Our property backs up to Follow Your Art, a wonderful community arts center committed to fostering creativity in students of all abilities, ages, and incomes. They recently laid down a new patio and cut out an entire wall of their garage to create a covered stage overlooking a modest-yet-cozy new outdoor performance space. I have played several benefits there over the past couple years, often emerging from the woodlot separating our properties schlepping all my gear for the show. I recently spent a gentle late summer evening playing guitar for a John Prine tribute show organized by my buddy Alastair Moock. During the first set, a toad tucked away in a stage-side flower bed began to sing, his trill picked up by a vocal mic and rebroadcast through the sound system. The music, the community, and the night felt warm and deeply inviting, holy in an almost impossibly informal way. Even the toad was feeling it. A couple weeks later, Polly and I volunteered with our local conservation commission to pull invasive vegetation from a pond around the corner from our house. My high school biology teacher used to say that “there is no biological definition of a weed. A ‘weed’ is any plant growing where you don’t want it to grow.” His words echoed in my head as I unwrapped bittersweet vines off cottonwoods (careful not to inadvertently distribute their berries) and pulled every Ailanthus I could find from the underbrush. This was but one small step in a larger civic restoration of the pond so it can be diversely enjoyed by the whole community. I narrated these actions with my own personal running commentary, imagining that every plant I yanked from the ground was akin to uprooting authoritarianism. It didn’t seem so improbable, and it was incredibly satisfying. We are living in extremely challenging times, and I know every generation feels some version of this. But our anxieties feel particularly generalized, our threats overwhelmingly existential. We’re not imagining any of it, and it’s hard to know what to do or even how to be. To the extent that I’m finding answers, those answers are local, almost comically so. My family, my yard, my block, my town, and my state have come to represent levers that I can push on to actually make a difference. Duetting on “Angel From Montgomery” with an frog? Uprooting weeds til your hands are sore and your back aches? These are real actions, in witness with real people, and they really help. I’m sure you have chances to act, to help, in your own communities, and I couldn’t recommend it more highly. Tip O’Neill famously once said that “all politics is local” and, I would argue, so are the wellsprings of hope. But the folks at the Parlor Room recently took over the Iron Horse, and it’s better than ever, for artists and audiences alike. Peter Mulvey’s Lamplighter Sessions - STAND UP & SING Thu Oct 29 - Passim, Cambridge MA - 8 pm Well this is gonna be fun. Every night of Mulvey’s Lamplighter Sessions has a unique theme, and I’m excited to be a part of singers night. The concept is simple: pianist extraordinaire James Rohr will get charts and play our songs, and us singer/songwriters will forgo our usual guitars and just…sing! I don’t think I’ve ever done this before, and I’ll need to practice some hand movements or something. Vance Gilbert, Jenna Nicholls, and more will be a part of this unique evening as well. Dec 11-13 - Under The Covers, Passim, Cambridge MA (on sale to general public 10/1) MP3 of the MONTH Around the time I recorded my western swing album Hillbilly Pilgrim I was writing a lot of songs in that country subgenre, interspersed between my edgier, more socially-conscious folk rock fare. “Roots” is one of those tongue-firmly-in-cheek swing songs, no disrespect intended to anyone in Kalamazoo or Schenectady. I never recorded this one, but it seems like a perfect fit with this month’s essay. It will be available for the month of October ONLY on my Bandcamp page.
