<image:title>Newsletter - JULY 2026 NEWSLETTER</image:title>
<image:caption>FALL CALIFORNIA TOUR WITH MAYA DE VITRY It’s been a long time since I spent any real amount of time on the left coast. I’m very excited to announce that I’ll be doing a proper California tour with Maya De Vitry, one of my favorite singer/songpersons! I’ll be solo, she’ll be duo, and I’m sure we’ll find a bunch of ways to collaborate. Tickets for some shows available already, and more will come up on my site as they go on sale. GOT GROTON TICKETS YET? I am beyond excited for this very special “Mark Erelli & Friends” show at Groton Hill Music Center this fall. Two of my dearest musical friends Lori McKenna and Amy Helm will join me and my band for a joyful, collaborative evening. This is the biggest room I’ve ever headlined, by far. Let’s sell it out and have a memorable evening together! GET YOUR “MARK ERELLI & FRIENDS” TIX NOW! THE WORLD BENEATH THE WORLD After I was diagnosed with retinitis pigmentosa (RP), one thing I found to be truly inspiring was the depth of the resourcefulness and ingenuity I found in the disabled community. When you can’t do things the way many others can, you are faced with a stark choice—withdraw and disengage, or find creative workarounds and survival strategies. It’s this latter spirit that drives me to keep traveling and performing to the extent and at the level I have always done. Sometimes this means requesting accommodations, or simply slowing down to give myself the time to do what I want to do and get where I need to go. This has afforded me astonishing glimpses of a phenomenon many might not otherwise notice: there is a world beneath the world you can see. Allow me to explain. I’ve always felt comfortable driving here, though Massachusetts drivers don’t have the best reputation when it comes to yielding and using turn signals. I find I now average 5 to 10 miles per hour slower speeds than I used to maintain, which typically puts me right at the posted speed limit. This is, apparently, an unpardonable sin for most Boston drivers. Though I get honked at more often, my restraint affords me the perspective to note just how dangerous most other drivers are. Running red lights, the utter refusal to ever allow anyone to take a left turn, or driving behind cars that are already actively reversing out of a parking space, and so much more. Maybe it’s always been this way around here, but now that I’ve slowed down a bit I see the indifference and impatience that my fellow drivers seem to be looking for any excuse to let bubble up to the surface. My deceleration also lets me access a wellspring of kindness and decency that, in hindsight, felt previously inaccessible. Increasingly, I choose to use an ID cane in public. I can maneuver passably without it, but chances are I will unknowingly cut someone off or knock something over that is lost to my peripheral vision. I’m not necessarily proud of how hard it feels to self-identify with my cane, but it reveals a lot if I can just get over myself. The stress of traveling on airplanes with an expensive acoustic guitar has probably shaved several years off my life expectancy. However, I now register as blind/low vision with the airline and pre-board with my cane, guitar, and the other passengers with disabilities who need a little more time. When a flight attendant first asked me if I needed help stowing my guitar safely in the overhead bin (where it always fits), I was speechless and nearly moved to tears. My combative mindset and the tension I normally hold in my body on airport days fell away. We are capable of startling kindness, though we often have to slow down a bit to experience them. I hate to parrot a tech bro tenet, but we are increasingly forced to deal with the consequences of living in a “move fast and break things” world. But life is nuanced and layered, and hurtling toward some perceived future benefit breakthrough often means blowing right by the depth of what we have to offer each other, right here and now. We cannot control the world, or the other people we share it with. We cancontrol how react to each other. I don’t claim to have a perfectly Zen track record interacting with the world. But I’ve seen it, the world of tenderness and ugliness beneath, hiding just below the surface. I wonder what life would look like if more of us were forced to slow down and reckon with the same discovery? “SUMMER IN THE CITY” RESIDENCY AT BOSTON HARBOR HOTEL FRI JULY 10 & 24, AUG 7 & 21 Want to help me reach new listeners by working the crowd a little at my summer residency? MP3 of the MONTH I have a new song I just wrote that explores the phenomenon I write about in this month’s essay. It’s called “Mind’s Eye,” and I’m happy to share a rough little work tape version recorded just after I finished the first draft. It’s available for the month of July at my Bandcamp page. Enjoy! SIDEMAN SECTION Sun July 19 - Passim, Cambridge MA (accompanying Michaela Anne) TICKETS SPRING GREEN TOUR MERCH I still have some merch! Spring Greenon green vinyl or CD, or grab a t-shirt or an autographed “Spring Green” lyric poster, you can buy one on Bandcamp! A WORD ABOUT PATREON JOIN OUR PATREON COMMUNITY! I love streaming music, and stream much of the music I listen to. But streaming does not translate into support, if we define “support” as “generating enough income to keep the lights on and fund the creation of more new music.” This is not your fault, we are all victims of tech companies’ unsustainable (except for them) model. The best way to sustainably support my creative output is by getting a subscription to my Patreon. As you're thinking about what you want to support in the coming year, I'd be honored if you made my music one of those things. For as little as $5/month ($60/year), you can help me do things like release new songs, make new albums, and tour consistently. In return, you get early access to all new music and much more. Thank you for your support! peace, mark</image:caption>
